London
Greater London, Europe’s largest conurbation, offers a wealth of musical events, concerts as well as opera and ballet; within Europe, London is leading in the production of musicals. Practically all British composers have lived – lifelong or intermittently – in the capital and many foreign musicians visited the town or chose it as their home; a great deal of their addresses is marked by generously supplied ‘blue plaques’. The dispersion of musical addresses is out of proportion: 45% are found in the City of Westminster (notably only a seventieth part of the entire surface of the metropolitan area!) and the majority of the rest is situated in the boroughs bordering Westminster (City, Camden, Kensington-Chelsey). Only 10% is situated south of the river Thames.
