Liszt in 1840 and 1846.

Former Augustinian monastery. Janáček studied here with Pavel Křížkovský, 1865-69. A Křížkovský relief represents his favourite composition the drowned maiden. The museum is devoted to the famous botanist Gregor Mendel, who worked in the monastery. In the adjoining church of Mary Assumption, Janáček played a Suter organ from 1698 (not preserved).

He used to live round here, at first in Křížova 15 and 46, later (until 1910) on nr. 2 of this Mendel square, in his time called Klašterní námeští . These houses were all demolished, just like the Beseda Brnenská where he worked.
